Student Research Funding

Call for Applications 

CEAS is pleased to offer research funding to graduate and advanced undergraduate students in good standing for research related to East Asia. These awards may be used for research experience within the U.S. or overseas.

Extended Application deadline: May 31, 2024 at 5PM (MST/UTC -7)

Eligibility: 

  • Currently enrolled University of Arizona seniors and graduate students (current of AY 2024-25). 

  • 3.0 cumulative GPA 

Award specifics: 

  • Amount: $1000 

  • To be used during summer or fall of 2024 

  • The research funds could be used for domestic and/or international travel, pending filing all proper travel authorizations and/or University of Arizona permissions. 

Requirements:

  • Research can be interdisciplinary, but it must be explicitly related to East Asian languages, cultures, and/or societies.
  • Research experience must be related to the applicant’s academic/career goals. 
  • A letter of support from the student’s research supervisor (a UArizona faculty member in the student’s home department) must be submitted to CEAS before the research support funds can be awarded. If you are seeking formal credit by your home department, please check with your department for specific guidelines and application procedures.

Students who receive the CEAS research funding will be required to do the following: 

  • Submit a report (maximum 2 pages) detailing how the research experience will further your career/studies goals. Due date is two months after the end of the research period. 

  • Submit 2-5 images (PNG or JPG format) of the experience (if applicable). 

  • Make a short presentation for other students about their research experience.  

  • File all proper travel authorizations - including UArizona International Travel Registry (if applicable).

  • Agree to have their reports and/or images published, in full or in part, in print or online, for CEAS promotional use. 

Application Checklist:

Please ensure that you have ALL the following information before applying.

  1. Your current cumulative GPA.
  2. Research project name.
  3. Start and end date of the research experience (if travel is involved).
  4. Statement of purpose (maximum 500 words) explaining how this East Asian Studies-related research experience will further your career/studies goals (PDF) .
  5. Resume / CV (PDF).
  6. Research proposal abstract which includes the description, goals, and impact of your research project (PDF).
  7. Estimated budget (incl. living expenses). Include all funds or grants you are already receiving. (PDF).
  8. Ability to obtain a letter of support from your referee by the application deadline. This must be sent directly to eas-center@arizona.edu
