CEAS is very excited to once again offer FREE online Tibetan language classes to University of Arizona students through our collaboration with the University of Kansas in the 2024-2025 academic year. Many students here come to Tibetan studies through our very own ⁠Dr. Rae Dachille⁠! In this episode, hosted by Dr. Scott Gregory, Dr. Dachille talks about her experience and fascinating research including Tibetan language, Tibetan Buddhism, and more.

Episode 5 2024 CHINA Town Hall: Part 2

CHINA Town Hall (CTH), is a two-part program that provides a snapshot of the current U.S.-China relationship and examines how that relationship reverberates at the local level – in our towns, states, and nation, connects Americans around the country with U.S. policymakers and thought leaders on China.

The 2024 CHINA Town Hall program took place on Tuesday, April 9, with featured speaker Dr. Kurt Campbell, Deputy Secretary of State. Following the national streaming, CEAS invited the local speaker, Frank Hawke, to continue the discussion. Professor Hawke is an independent director of a large state-owned financial services firm and chairs the Human Resources sub-committee of the board. Professor Hawke was in the group of the very first American exchange students to study in China, at Peking University in 1979. This episode is the 2nd part of the local portion recording with Professor Hawke.

Episode 3 Tell Me About Water for Semiconductor Manufacturing in Arizona

On episode three of Tell Me About East Asia, we bring you a presentation from CEAS' first virtual roundtable on Semiconductor Manufacturing: Opportunities and Challenges to the US and Beyond. Dr. Sharon Megdal of the University of Arizona will discuss water use for semiconductor manufacturing in Arizona.

Dr. Megdal is the director of the University of Arizona’s Water Resources Research Center and a Professor of Environmental Science. She also serves as C.W. & Modene Neely Endowed Professor and is recognized as a Distinguished Outreach Professor. In 2020, she was awarded the Warren A. Hall Medal for lifetime achievement in water resources research and education by the Universities Council on Water Resources.

Dr. Megdal aims to bridge the academic, practitioner, and civil society communities through water policy and management research, education, and engagement programs. Her applied research projects include analysis of water management, policy, and governance, groundwater recharge, and transboundary groundwater assessment.

Episode 2 Tell Me About Semiconductor Manufacturing in Taiwan

On episode two of Tell Me About East Asia, we bring you a presentation from CEAS' first virtual roundtable on Semiconductor Manufacturing: Opportunities and Challenges to the US and BeyondDr. James Lin of the University of Washington will discuss TSMC, the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturer. Based in Taiwan, TSMC plays a major role in Taiwan’s economy, shapes the country’s geopolitical situation, and influences the island’s environment.

Dr. Lin is an Assistant Professor of International Studies at the University of Washington. He received his PhD in History from University of California, Berkeley, in 2017. His upcoming book, from the University of California Press, examines the history of Taiwan’s agrarian development from the early 20th century to its Cold War missions to Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

Episode 1 Tell Me About Social Media in Japan

Hosted by Dr. Scott Gregory and featuring Dr. Kimberly Hassel, this episode discusses how the development of telecommunication devices and the outbreak of COVID shift the notions of sociality and selfhood in Japan, especially among young people. Dr. Hassel is an anthropologist and digital ethnographer specializing in the intersections of digital culture, youth culture, and identity in contemporary Japan.
