The University of Arizona’s Title VI-funded centers—CEAS, CLAS, CMES, and CERCLL—successfully co-sponsored the Virtual Workshop: Teaching Less Commonly Taught Languages (LCTLs) at Hispanic-Serving Institutions, which took place from October 18 to 20, 2024. This event attracted a remarkable 203 registered participants from 27 U.S. states, Puerto Rico, and 21 countries. Participants represented educators teaching 19 different languages, underscoring the workshop’s diversity and global reach.

The workshop brought together language experts, researchers, and educators to explore innovative strategies for recruiting and sustaining enrollments in LCTL programs at Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) and beyond.

Participants had the opportunity to engage in a variety of interactive panels:

  • HSI Missions (October 18): Explored how HSIs can align their missions with promoting LCTL programs.
  • General Trends in Recruitment and Enrollment (October 19): Examined enrollment trends and practical strategies for attracting students.
  • Student Retention Strategies (October 19): Focused on innovative methods to ensure sustained student engagement and success.
  • Technology and AI in Pedagogies of LCTLs (October 20): Discussed leveraging AI and digital tools in language teaching to enhance classroom experiences.

Workshop recordings are now available on CEAS’s YouTube Playlist.
