Are you interested in internationalizing your community college lessons and curriculum to include East Asian content?

Program Introduction

Do you have innovative ideas that will internationalize your lessons and introduce the languages and cultures of East Asia to your students, but you need support? Do you also wish to share your work with fellow educators?

The International Studies Partnership Program (ISPP) from the Center for East Asian Studies (CEAS) supports selected faculty fellows from community colleges to work collaboratively on a project with a faculty resource colleague at the University of Arizona to create new instructional materials. These new materials must aim to internationalize undergraduate community college course curricula focusing on the East Asia region. Community college educators from various fields, including humanities, social sciences, and sciences, are encouraged to apply. Selected fellows receive a $500 stipend, University of Arizona library privileges, and support from their faculty resource colleague.

Application Requirements

Working in collaboration with University of Arizona faculty and utilizing university resources, fellows will create, redesign, or expand a course unit or syllabus to include substantial East Asian content. For this project, the East Asian region is defined as mainland China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Macau, Mongolia, North Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam. Projects focusing on the Himalayan region may also be considered. In addition, projects may encompass countries or areas outside East Asia if the project includes significant East Asia content. To ensure the viability of the finished product, CEAS requires that applicants consult with their department heads during the application period to ensure that the proposed unit/class can be taught. Faculty from anywhere in the United States are invited to apply. However, priority will be given to proposals from faculty located in the Lower South, Desert Southwest, and Intermountain West. Applications are being accepted on a rolling basis, with the project beginning the following term after arrangements have been finalized.

Scope of Participation

During the term, each fellow will be paired with a University of Arizona faculty resource colleague with expertise related to the subject of the proposed project. Fellows are expected to communicate – by email, Zoom, phone, or in person – with their faculty resource colleague at least three times during the semester. CEAS recommends meeting once at the outset of the project, once midway through the semester, and once when the project has been fully developed.

Fellows are expected to complete their project within four (4) weeks after the end of the term. However, depending upon the scope and topic of the project, there is the possibility to renew the fellowship for a maximum of three more semesters for a total of four semesters. Fellows should use the teaching material developed throughout the project in their lessons. The teaching materials developed during this collaborative project will be published, with attribution, on the Community College Curriculum Internationalization website (currently under reconstruction) in return for the completed project. We strongly encourage participants to engage in at least one CEAS workshop, schedule permitting.

Fellowship Terms

In return for the completed project, fellows will receive a stipend of $500 per semester, University of Arizona library access, faculty resource colleague support, and CEAS support. The stipend will be issued after the successful approval and completion of the project.

Selection Track

The selection of fellows is a collaborative process conducted by administrative and instructional personnel at CEAS.

  1. Applicants must submit a completed application form, statement of purpose (uploaded document), proof of departmental permission (email), and CV (uploaded document)
  2. After the reception of a completed application, CEAS staff will confirm your application and begin to find a suitable faculty partner.
  3. Once a faculty partner has been found, you agree to the project. The project will begin at the start of the following semester.
